Oom Samie se winkel

by Cherice Torlage -  23 June 2020

Oom Samie se Winkel is a Victorian style shop that still operates in the same way it did in 1904. This popular attraction which is now a national monument offers all kinds of unique products ranging from boiled sweets and sticky toffee to authentic old-style butter churns and a wide range of unique knic-knacks. They also stock rare antiques, books, fruit and vegetables, hand crafted brooms and traditional South African Biltong.
Oom Samie se winkel is the oldest shop in Stellenbosch. Originally named XL Store, the General dealer is now named after its original owner whose parents bought the shop for him in 1904. Oom Samie was disabled and incapable of doing any physical work but was known for his kind-heartedness and for always including a little extra in the purchases of customers whom he knew were facing difficulties. He even raised and educated a family member whose parents were killed in an accident. Some describe the shop as entering a time-machine, it smells of tobacco and sugar, salted fish and herbs and spices and brings a nostalgic smile to all who visit.
One of Oom Samie’s great loves was baking and even today his nephew fondly speaks of his koeksisters, sago pudding and orange cake. In the backyard, oom samie kept chickens. Today this area is home to H-Homestyle Eatery which serves hearty traditional meals.
Oom Samie se Winkel is a working museum and a gem that is rarely found in our modern world of franchises and supermarkets and is truly a must-visit for both locals and tourists alike.

Enjoying Stellenbosch to it’s fullest

by Sherize Francis  -   15 June 2020

Being the second oldest town in South-Africa, Stellenbosch is loved by many from around the world, with tourist and local South-Africans visiting their favourite town year after year, never running out of things to do and places to explore.

Stellenbosch is famous for it’s natural beauty and oak-lined street, Cape Dutch architecture, history and of course it’s wine routes.
Despite the towns heritage, ‘Stellies’ – as it’s locally known, is a university town with an amazing youthful vibe. Surrounded by wine farms, the town is abuzz with wine bars. Café’s, many of Western Capes top restaurants, boutiques, art galleries and museums. Stellenbosch is still quite small making it an idyllic setting to explore on foot.
The town also host regular festivals, among them the Woordfees, an Afrikaans – language event focusing on the written word, featuring SA’s leading writers, poets and vocalist’s.

Also worth mentioning is the famous Cheese Festival, that attracts a world wide audience, joining our local producers every year to celebrate their harvest with the best cheeses and wine SA has to offer, all locally produced.

The Stellenbosch wine routes- the largest and oldest in the country- encompass more than 200 wine and grape producers in the region. Make sure to explore all 5 sub-routes; Greater Simonsberg, Bottellary Hills, Stellenbosch valley, Stellenbosch Berg and Helderberg, each has it’s own unique wines, climate and charm.
A must see for any visitor coming our way is the Delaire Graff Estate, where the art, gardens and architecture will leave you breathless. The views from the top of the Hetshoogte pass are unsurpassed, the food is exquisite and the art collection impressive. It’s here that the original Tretchikoff’s ‘Chinese Girl’ resides, and our very own local Dylan Lewis’s towering cheetahs cast from solid bronze grace the estates landscape.

Whether you fancy a shopping spree, big 5 Safari, winelands escape, luxury cuisine or just want to break away from the City over the weekend, Stellenbosch has something for everyone to enjoy, so make sure not to miss out on this South-African gem.

Our first restaurant we would like to introduce is ‘Jardine'

by Cherice Toralge    -   24 April 2020

Relaxing on our Jan cats no 2 balcony with a glass of superb Lanzerac chenin blanc, much to our delight and surprise, painters, cleaners, decorators where arriving across the street! What was happening there? As foodies we hoped it would be another amazing restaurant. Slowly we could see the magic happening and “Jardine” was created. How exciting to know this neglected historic house was going to be loved again. Yes a wonderful warm and homely intimate space opened with a roaring fireplace making any winter meal a feast.

Aromas to make you want to dress and walk over and book a table, drifted towards our balcony. Guests in wonderful cars, the most amazing daring fashion styles arrived, filling chairs. We could see mouth watering carefully created dishes being served. Preparing amazing food paired with some of the best wines in Stellenbosch we soon found out was what George Jardine does best. Delighted that two of our apartments situated in the very central Jan cats building is only a stone throw away from Jardine.
